If you are female, chances are you suffer from cellulite, a condition characterized by what the French term peau d’orange, a rather glamourous way of saying “orange peel skin”. Greater than 90% of women and some men have this condition which commonly in the buttocks, thighs and hips. Of course, adolescence is a time when females begin to see an increase in adiposity in these areas with hormonal changes, but one might ask why is there such a prevalence in females versus males? Let us look to the cause to answer that question.

What Causes Cellulite?

Fibrous strands which connect the overlying skin to the deeper connective tissue act as columns between the subcutaneous fat. In females, these columns stand at a 90 degree angle to the surface of the skin and allow the fat to bulge up and out, creating the dimpling effect known as cellulite.

In males, fibrous strands connect to the overlying skin at a 30-45 degree angle and this shields the fat from herniating or bulging against the skin. Thus, far less men suffer from cellulite than women.

How Do We Treat Cellulite?

We must eliminate the fibrous bands in order to effectively treat cellulite. This is the extraordinary problem, and one which many scientists have endeavored to achieve. Some have attempted to cut the bands, but if one leaves the patient with unsightly scars, what have we truly achieved? Injections which attempted to dissolve the fibrous bands were developed, but proved painful and expensive, and results were temporary as the fibrous bands tended to grow back and the cellulite returned. We essentially threw the baby out with the bathwater. Or we traded the skillet for the frying pan. We were not making any forward progress when it came to the issue of cellulite, an issue which impacted over 90% of the population.

Enter EmTone by BTL. EmTone is a non-invasive technology which causes disruption of the fibrous bands by thermal and mechanical energy production. A typical series of treatments includes six sessions, spaced two times per week. Patients report a sensation much like experiencing a hot stone massage. Average treatment times are typically around 12-15 minutes per area, and there is no recovery time, which allows a patient to resume life and play on the same day of her EmTone treatment.

In a few short weeks, we enter another swimsuit season. Yes–spring break is just around the corner! Start planning how to Divorce your Cellulite and Marry Emtone! Give yourself a Galentine, not another boring Valentine. 2025 will be a different this year, Gals! Some patients see smoother, firmer skin after only a single treatment. It could be you.
