Volbella launched in the last quarter of 2016, but it is still not as well-known as its predecessors, Juvederm and Voluma. Volbella is a hyaluronic acid product, similar to its family members of Juvederm and Voluma, but it has a completely different cross-linkage that allows for decreased viscosity but excellent longevity—around 18 months.
Volbella was created as an option for filling very superficial fine lines as opposed to deeper or more coarse wrinkles or folds. I like Volbella best for the patient who is starting to see a decline in their lip volume, which is a normal part of the aging face, but which makes the patient start to have thin lip as opposed to a normal one.
Patients who have never used lip filler before are quite hesitant to move forward for the primary reason they do not wish to look artificial or fake. They like their lips in their natural state, but unfortunately time marches on. I like to explain that by selecting the proper filler and using the proper filling technique, Volbella is the best option for a patient who desires their own natural and subtle lip, and without the unwanted “plump” lip appearance.
I also really like Volbella in the patient with lip lines radiating out from the lip body onto the cutaneous or flesh-colored portion of the lip. Often times, patients will describe these as “smokers’ lines even though I have never smoked”. By utilizing both the Volbella for very fine filling, and a small amount of Botox place across that upper lip in 1 unit increments, the lips can be rejuvenated completely and in a very natural and beautiful way. I love the fact that Volbella is sold in a very small 0.4cc quantity. This is less than half of what is typically found in a syringe of filler.
If you are considering lip filler, but are nervous about the outcome, please call Dermatology Office at 214-373-7546 and ask to schedule a consultation to discuss whether Volbella may be right for you.
