Vitiligo is a skin condition in which there is loss of pigment from localized areas of skin resulting in irregular skin coloration. The cause of Vitiligo is unknown, but it is thought that the body attacks its own pigment cells causing them to be destroyed in local areas. Frequently affected areas are the face, elbows and knees, hands and feet and genitalia. This condition is chronic and there is no cure, however, topical medications, UV light and lasers can in some cases return the skin to normal color and require constant upkeep. In severe cases an oral medication can be used to remove all pigment, leaving the skin white and predisposing the skin to serious sunburns and skin cancer.
